Balancing Act: Thriving as a New Nurse
A balancing act
Entering the nursing profession is an exciting and rewarding journey, but it can also be incredibly demanding. Whether you’re a new nurse juggling the responsibilities of your job, or a student preparing for the NCLEX, exhaustion can be a significant challenge. Here are some comprehensive strategies that prioritize your well-being, helping you stay energized, focused, and motivated.
Self-care comes first!
1. Prioritize Self-Care:
Sleep:
- Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Use blackout curtains or white noise machines if you’re working night shifts.
- Adequate sleep is essential for memory retention and cognitive function.
Nutrition:
- Eat balanced meals with plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains.
- Prepare healthy snacks to have on hand during shifts or study sessions.
Hydration:
- Keep a water bottle and stay hydrated throughout your shift and study time.
Exercise:
- Incorporate regular physical activity into your routine, even if it’s just a short walk. Exercise can boost your energy and improve concentration.
Pomodoro Technique
2. Break Up Study Sessions and Manage Workload:
Pomodoro Technique:
- For studying, work for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. After four sessions, take a longer break of 15-30 minutes.
Short, Frequent Sessions:
- Break study time into smaller chunks throughout the day instead of marathon sessions.
Organization:
- Use checklists to keep track of tasks and prioritize based on urgency and importance.
- Allocate specific times to complete tasks at work and during study sessions.
Clean desk area, free from clutter and distractions.
3. Optimize Your Environment:
Ergonomics:
- Pay attention to ergonomics at work to prevent physical strain. Adjust the height of beds, use proper lifting techniques, and wear supportive footwear.
Declutter:
- Keep your study space organized and free of distractions to help you focus better.

- Talk to colleagues, friends, or family about your experiences. Join a peer support group for new nurses or study groups for NCLEX preparation.
A weekly study schedule
5. Create a Study Schedule and Work Routine:
Set Realistic Goals:
- Break down your study material into manageable chunks and set daily or weekly goals.
- Establish a consistent study routine to build a habit, making it easier to start each day.
Routine:
- Create a consistent work routine, including short, regular breaks to rest and recharge, even if it’s just a few minutes to sit down or stretch.
Being a nurse means you will also be a life long learner
6. Continued Learning and Professional Development
Active Learning:
- Engage in active learning methods such as practice questions, teaching the material to someone else, or using flashcards.
Continuing education:
- Stay updated with nursing practices through continuing education, but pace yourself to avoid being overwhelmed.
Mentorship:
- Seek a mentor who can provide guidance, support, and practical advice.
Work / Career vs Life / Family

Boundaries:
- Set clear boundaries between work and personal life. Leave work concerns at work whenever possible.

- Engage in activities and hobbies outside work and study to relax and recharge.
Journaling is an excellect way to self-reflect.
8. Reflect and Adjust:
Self-Reflection:
- Regularly reflect on what strategies are working for you and what might need adjustment.
Adaptability:
- Be flexible and open to changing your routine if something isn’t working.
A counselor providing insight
9. Seeking Professional Help:
Counseling:
- If you’re struggling with stress, anxiety, or burnout, consider talking to a mental health professional.
Employee Assistance Programs:
- Utilize any available employee assistance programs for additional support and resources.
Happiness is a mood, positivity is a mindset.
10. Stay Positive:
Celebrate Successes:
- Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small.
Positive Affirmations:
- Use positive affirmations to maintain a positive outlook and boost your confidence.
By implementing these proven strategies, new nurses and NCLEX candidates can more effectively manage their exhaustion and maintain a healthy work-life balance.
